The MAC Summit 2024 seeks to bring together communities who are affected by mining, but whose voices have been marginalised and excluded, and who continue to bear the cost of wealth extraction on their land, but who still remain under-developed and under-serviced.
The primary objective of the MAC Summit 2024 is to prioritise and amplify the voices of marginalised and affected communities, ensuring that those in positions of power actively listen and acknowledge our concerns.
Hosted by MACUA/WAMUA, a movement dedicated to advocating for the voices of communities overlooked in mining license allocation, community development, and mining income distribution, the 2024 MAC Summit seeks to address the health and environmental repercussions of mining that disproportionately affect marginalised communities.
Over the last decade, MACUA/WAMUA has tirelessly campaigned for changes to laws governing affected communities, but the response from those in power has been sluggish in recognising the voices of the affected communities.
The MAC Summit seeks to be a representative forum of affected communities that will provide a clear mandate and message to those in Power, that the time to change the lives of mining affected communities is now.
The Theme of MACS 2024 will be:
“RECLAIMING PUBLIC PARTICIPATION AND INCLUSION AS THE FOUNDATION OF EVERY DEMOCRACY”
In order to book your community’s seat at the table, applications to join the Summit must meet the following general criteria:
1. All applicants must be able to show that they are a community leader or community representative with a clear mandate from their community.
2. Community leaders must be able to show a history of community mobilisation and engagement.
3. Applicants must be able to show clear knowledge and understanding of the Minerals Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA) or related Mining legislation which impacts on communities.
Successful Applicants will join a host of community representatives from across South Africa, and other key stakeholders such a government entity, mining companies, political parties, civil society organisations and academics, under one roof, to pave the way towards a more just and equitable mining sector for South African communities.
Successful applicants will be provided with preferential rates when booking accommodation and the organisers have arranged block bookings for over 300 delegates.
Applicants may also apply for support for accommodation and travel to Johannesburg, and applicants who meet the criteria, as set out above, will be given priority when allocating funding support. All Applications must be submitted by no later than 15 January 2024
