In this story published first by GroundUp’s Sandiso Phaliso we remember with great sadness those who suffered immeasurable injustices under the brutal regime of apartheid. For too long, they have carried the burden of the painful past, and for too long, they have waited for the reparations promised to them by the Department of Justice. About 100 pensioners, supported by the Khulumani Support Group, gathered, holding placards and chanting slogans outside Parliament in Cape Town.
Their demands are not mere requests; but are the rightful claims of those who have endured unspeakable horrors at the hands of an oppressive system. They assert with command and authority on the placards that they will not rest, and they will not vote in elections, until every victim of apartheid receives the reparations they are owed.
Many eligible individuals are still waiting for compensation, facing frustration and disillusionment with the government’s delays. This underscores the urgent need for tangible redress and acknowledgement of the suffering endured under apartheid.
