Sex workers urgently call on the President to sign new Bill

As reported by Chris Gilili of Elitsha, sex workers and their organisations are working together on the #WhoSpeaksForUs campaign to make sex work legal. This means sex workers will be decriminalised, and have labour rights as other workers do.

The campaign want politicians and the government to listen to sex workers and sign the Bill to pass the new laws with urgency. Glynnis, who has been a sex worker for 20 years, is hopeful that the politicians they support will listen to them.

Partner groups like Asijiki Coalition and Sisonke National Sex Worker Movement on this campaign have been organising for the new law since 2021 and gave a list of demands to the Department of Justice in 2023.

Connie from Asijiki said politicians should keep their promises about making sex work legal. Megan from SWEAT said the new laws should respect the rights of sex workers.

A report shows that police abuse sex workers in custody so the passing of this important, it can decrease these violations and increase the health and dignity of themselves and their families.
