The media release by the MACUA team reports that in a show of unity, activists from Somkhele, KwaZulu-Natal, gathered on June 5th to protest Tendele Coal’s illegal actions and attempts to forcibly remove the community from their homes. Despite their constitutional right to protest, they faced threats from armed thugs protecting the mine, while police stood by and did nothing.
Tendele Coal employee Lucky Mkhwanazi intimidated activists by photographing and recording them throughout the protest. Approximately 400 meters into the march, armed individuals blocked the activists’ path, threatening to shoot anyone who continued. Shockingly, the police, led by Officer Mathaba, declared the protest illegal and failed to address the threats against the protesters, raising concerns about police impartiality.
The armed individuals, known members of the Somkhele community, used offensive language and derogatory remarks against the activists, violating democratic and human rights principles. This incident underscores the urgent need for mining companies like Petmin to be held accountable for their actions and the exploitation of marginalized communities.
After the assassination of activist Fikile Ntshangase in 2021 and ongoing attacks on residents opposing the mine, it is crucial for the media to spotlight these acts of intimidation. Highlighting these injustices can help protect the brave individuals fighting for their community’s rights and ensure corporate entities respect human rights and legal standards.
