The South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) is deeply saddened that 6 children were killed when their scholar bus transport collided with a train on their way to school. We extend our deepest condolences to the families who lost their children in this horrific accident.
It is alleged that the scholar bus driver was intoxicated and as he was approaching the railway crossing, he received warning signs from the train driver which he ignored and continued to cross the railway causing the accident. This reckless behavior must be met with severe consequences, and the driver should be given a harsh penalty for causing the deaths of these innocent children.
We also urge the government to provide counselling to the families and to the pupils that survived the accident. Offering solace and financial assistance to the grieving parents during this unbearable time is essential.
