Celebrating Women’s Day with theatre play “Madam President Evelyn”

Aphiwe Ngowapi reports that Makhanda will celebrate Women’s Day with the return of the theatrical production Madam President Evelyn at the Joza Indoor Sports Centre. Originally showcased during the 50th anniversary of the National Arts Festival in June, this satirical, dance-infused play tells the story of Evelyn Peter, a domestic worker running for South Africa’s presidency in 2024.

Directed by Thumamna Sibhozo and choreographed by Likhaya Jack, the play is Evelyn’s campaign advocates for issues such as Ubuntu, youth employment, free internet access, and the professionalization of domestic work. Sibhozo emphasizes that the play focuses on those often overlooked in society. The production, featuring students from Ntsika Secondary School, celebrates South Africa’s 30 years of democracy by honoring the contributions of mothers and domestic workers. Notably, grade 10 student Lina Njovane plays a cruel madam, with her favorite scene being when domestic workers confront their employers. Grade 11 student Lihlonele Marawu portrays two characters, expressing a preference for a scene where Evelyn addresses the community. Madam President Evelyn is anticipated to be a significant highlight of Makhanda’s Women’s Day celebrations.”
