Johannesburg/Maputo
The Southern Africa Human Rights Defenders Network (SouthernDefenders) unequivocally condemns the abduction of Sheila Wilson, a courageous activist and journalist, by the Mozambique Police. Sheila Wilson was forcibly taken into custody and has been held incommunicado since the early evening of June 4, 2024. This abhorrent act is a stark violation of fundamental human rights and a gross infringement on press freedom.
Sheila Wilson is known for her fearless advocacy for social justice and her commitment to exposing the truth. Her abduction is not only an attack on her as an individual but also an assault on the principles of democracy and freedom of expression. Such actions by state authorities are unacceptable and cannot be tolerated in a society that values human dignity and the rule of law.
Through a live Facebook live video that she recorded it is clear that Sheila Wilson was forcibly taken by police officers without any legal justification or due process. This incident is part of a disturbing pattern of increasing state hostility towards civil society, activists, and journalists in Mozambique. Such actions not only threaten individual freedoms but also undermine the very fabric of a democratic society.
The abduction of Sheila Wilson is not just an attack on one individual, but a threat to the fundamental freedoms of all citizens in Mozambique. We must unite in demanding justice for Sheila Wilson and defending the rights of those who courageously stand up for what is right
SouthernDefenders stands in solidarity with Sheila Wilson and all those who courageously defend human rights and freedom of the press in Mozambique and beyond risking their lives for justice, truth, and freedom. Our Chairperson Prof Adriano Nuvunga has made an urgent alert calling for her release and perpetrators to be brought to book.
We call upon the Mozambican authorities to:
Immediately and Unconditionally Release Sheila Wilson. Holding an activist and journalist incommunicado is a severe violation of international human rights standards. We demand her immediate release and an end to all forms of harassment and intimidation against her.
Guarantee her safety and wellbeing and Ensure Accountability: The Mozambican government must conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Sheila Wilson’s abduction. Those responsible for this unlawful act must be held accountable to prevent such violations from recurring.
Uphold Human Rights and Press Freedom: The Mozambican authorities must reaffirm their commitment to protecting human rights, including the rights to freedom of expression, assembly, and association. Journalists and activists must be allowed to operate without fear of retaliation or violence.
Engage with Civil Society: We urge the Mozambican government to engage in constructive dialogue with civil society organizations and human rights defenders to address the broader issues of human rights abuses and to work towards creating a safer environment for all citizens.
