Job Title: Candidate Attorney
Location: Johannesburg (LRC National Office), Durban, Makhanda or Cape Town
The Legal Resources Centre South Africa (RF) NPC (LRC) is a law clinic that pursues novel and effective legal solutions by using a range of strategies, including impact litigation, law reform, participation in partnerships and development processes within and outside South Africa. We are a non-profit, public interest law centre, providing legal services to the poor and marginalized persons and communities, with the emphasis on land and education rights.
The LRC aims to train candidate attorneys not only for their future roles as lawyers in traditional legal practices but also as prospective human rights lawyers and advocates – capable of participating in any legal environment, by equipping them with wide ranging skills that exceed the traditional candidate attorney training. Although academic results will get us interested in you, this is not all that we are looking for. We seek energetic, self-motivated, hard – working, well rounded and high calibre graduates who are committed and suited to the practice of law within the diverse environment of a strategic public interest law centre like the LRC.
Essential qualifications and experience:
An LLB degree (an LLM will be advantageous)
Demonstrable interest in human rights work and social justice
Good academic record and writing skills
Computer Literacy
Good organizational skills
Professional personality
Honest, reliable and driven
Fast Learner
Willing to work long hours as per the demands of public interest law practice
Logical thinker and ability to convey concepts, work independently, prioritise instructions and demonstrate initiative
Driver’s license and ability to drive would be advantageous
Skills and Attributes:
Self-driven, proactive, determined, and resilient.
Perfect written English (essential), together with the ability to think outside the box and write creatively and persuasively.
Excellent interpersonal skills: A good communicator, articulate and confident in presenting to key decision-makers. The ability to pursue leads and develop funding relationships is key.
Good research skills and the ability to identify opportunities.
A commitment to social change and alignment with the values of the LRC.
Highly organised with good administration, time and project management skills.
Proficient in Microsoft Office
