The COVID pandemic has served to deepen inequality across the continent, pushing many countries into debt, and demonstrating the need for massive public spending. At the same time, the Pandora Papers have exposed how many of the wealthiest corporations have been using tax havens and clever financial arrangements in order to hide or grow their wealth. Every year, the African continent bleeds close to $90bn from these illicit financial flows and corporate profit shifting practices, with South Africa alone losing $27bn per year. The time for change is now. In conjunction with the Pan African Conference on illicit financial flows and taxation: combating IFF to Bridge Africa’s Widening Inequality Gap, the Alternative Information & Development Centre (with the support of Tax Justice Network Africa) is hosting a national conference on the 26th of October. This will be a platform for mutual learning and engagement, where participants will be able to build on each other’s strengths in order to understand not only illicit financial flows and profit shifting but also how we can best collaborate in order to combat them.
Key themes, presentations, and discussions will include:
– Profit shifting and the post-COVID recovery.
– The state of play for global tax reform.
– Profit shifting and wage evasion.
– Ground-up approaches to tackling profit shifting.
– Building a broad campaign to Stop the Bleeding.
See the provisional programme below.
