Save Madibeng strongly believes that it is possible for the people of Madibeng to get clean water services. This Civic Movement recommends that the ‘Powers that Be’ within the Madibeng Local Municipality should establish a water entity (board), which will be responsible for managing water services adequately while retaining its role as a Political Authority responsible for service oversight like the City of Joburg playing oversight over Joburg Waters.

“Currently, every resident of Madibeng knows that the Madibeng Local Municipality lacks the technical capacity to manage water services efficiently and effectively and also lack the financial capacity to do that, ” said Save Madibeng’s leader Sydney Monnakgotla

According to Monnakgotla, this proposal will enable the Municipality to end its history of providing poor water and sanitation services to the residents of Madibeng.

“As Save Madibeng, we believe a professional entity will focus on this core set of tasks of ensuring that water services is managed adequately,” Monnakgotla explained

Achieving this vision, Save Madibeng will require a humongous support from the people of Madibeng. Soon after, the people of Madibeng have voted for their community development activists to be part of the Madibeng Council, the team will push for the establishment of the water board to close a chapter of an ongoing lack of water provisions across Madibeng Local Municipality’s areas.

With only three (3) seats in the Madibeng Local Municipality’s Council, Save Madibeng has achieved success in ensuring that the promises it made to the residents prior to the local elections are kept genuinely so.

The first action is its ‘Skills Audit Project’ campaign, which seeks the current Madibeng Local Municipality’s administration to end any form of maladministration on Human Resource malpractices whereby the ruling party leaders have been giving their comrades and family members top jobs without the necessary skills, expertise and qualifications. Save Madibeng further seeks the current administration to put a moratorium on the filling of posts until an independent auditor has performed an independent audit. Moreover, the Civic Movement seeks the current administration to review salary notches especially of political appointees.

The movement has tried to table the motion during the previous council sitting however the Speaker did not prioritize. However all is not lost, during the very same council sitting, the Mayor complimented Save Madibeng for taking that action and dubbed it an ‘Act of Bravery’ and ‘Save Madibeng taking parliament to Madibeng’. He further said that this was the first time a motion like this being requested in the history of Madibeng Council.

Another action, Save Madibeng handed over a ‘title deeds’ petition of the people of Sonop outside Brits to the Municipal Manager. The people of Sonop has been without title deeds for ages and Save Madibeng has therefore prioritized that to ensure that they are formalized.

The third action, the movement ensured that all the shenanigans by the ruling party’s ward councilors of running ward committees elections without a proper coordination was halted by the office of the Speaker.

Lastly, Save Madibeng has received positive news from the Human Rights Commission regarding the pending issue of Damonsville High School.

Save Madibeng will continue to play a pivotal role in ensuring that maladministration is the thing of the past in Madibeng Local Municipality and ensure that the residents receive uninterrupted services.

Save Madibeng has been given three (3) important seats to represent the people of Madibeng in the Local Municipality Council.

This is a historic move that a civic movement gets ‘thumbs up’ from the people of Madibeng to represent them instead of a political party.

Save Madibeng’s convener Sydney Monnakgotla said, “Just like Che Guevara said – the people are their onw liberators – the people of Madibeng are finally their own liberators and have given us a task to begin the work to fix Madibeng areas and make Madibeng a great place to live, to work, to innovate, to grow and develop local economy and to play and have fun within our areas.”

“We have been the voices of our communities outside the Municipality but with these three seats – we will rise against any form of poor service delivery across all areas,” expressed Monnakgotla

Monnakgotla further said, “Other than all those that voted for Save Madibeng, as a convener I would like to thank the executive team of Save Madibeng – our coordinator and his deputy who had pulled out all the stops to ensure that we have an effective organization, the deputy convener, the treasurer, the spokesperson, the mayoral candidate, the cluster coordinators, all the wards candidates, the ward teams including their coordinators, the supporters and most important the voters.”

Save Madibeng as a civil rights movement will continue to ensure that community interests and needs are defended.
