Harmful mine dust

Ogies is a town next to eMalahleni, and coal mines and power stations surround its township at Phola location, These industries pose a significant threat to residents’ lives due to severe air pollution and contaminated water.

Kendal Power Station and Coal Mines:

– The Kendal Power Station is surrounded by numerous coal mines.

– These mines blast, releasing toxic dust and particles into the air.

– Barricaded dams have been created to pump water for washing extracted coal, using toxic chemicals mixed with water.

Health Risks:

– Air pollution causes respiratory problems, lung diseases, and cancer.

– Contaminated water affects both human health and the environment.

Personal Testimonial:

On the 12th of July 2024 my family member, a security guard at a coal mine in Kendal, experienced a nose bleeding and coughing due to black dust exposure. Colleagues confirmed similar health issues and most mine workers are always sick due to dust exposure. Mine owners fail to provide adequate equipment and PPE, prioritizing PROFIT over workers’ lives.

Community Impact:

– Community members, especially children and pregnant women are affected by coal dust.

– Houses are cracking due to blasting, water is scarce, while mines have plenty of water for coal washing.

– Farming and hunting areas have been barricaded by miners, violating social ownership and constitutional rights.

Solutions:

– Hold departments issuing mining licenses accountable for environmental and social impacts.

– Advocate for people’s rights and stand up for affected communities.

– Demand respect for the environment, people’s lives, and workers’ rights
