As first reported by GroundUp‘s Marecia Damons, dozens of housing activists, represented by various Social movements, took to the streets of central Cape Town on Saturday, demanding action on affordable housing initiatives. Their voices echoed through the bustling city as they marched under the banner of the #Land4PeopleNot4Parking campaign.

The activists surprised Western Cape Premier Alan Winde during a coffee break at a Buitenkant Street cafe and clarified their demands. Winde pledged to engage in discussions with the activist groups, acknowledging their concerns and expressing willingness to explore solutions.

Amidst chants urging swift action before elections, Winde received a proposal outlining affordable housing strategies from represenatives of these social movements, signalling a potential shift in policy priorities.

They are urging the government to prioritize people over parking lots, advocating for using state-owned land for affordable housing. With specific proposals and a desire for a more just society, they seek meaningful dialogue and action.
