On the 16th March 2023 Tharisa Minerals conducted a blasting at the west pit.

Flying rocks from the blasting struck a shack that belongs to a certain member of the community, immediately after incident mine officials were see at the shack to supply new materials to rebuild the shack.

They brought new corrugated iron sheets to repair the damage and a compensation of R7000.00 (seven thousand) and a permanent job at the mine.

The irony of the matter is that it took a near fatal incident for the mine to acknowledge the extent and the impact of their operation on the community. For if it wasn’t because of that incident the poor person would still be without a job today.

Other flying rocks also fell on some community members who refused to talk to mine officials. They opted rather to report the incident to the Rustenburg DMRE offices who promised to look into the matter. Much to our surprise the blasting still continues and is business as usual for the mine, while the matter has not received any attention
