Marecia Damons reports that in November 2023, three women launched Kamvelihle Clothing Manufacturing and Trade in South Africa. What began as a student project has grown into a thriving business employing nine women, producing a range of clothing items sold in local markets.
The founders overcame initial challenges, including limited access to equipment, by securing donated industrial sewing machines. They’ve expanded their product line and client base through social media and word-of-mouth marketing.
Notably, the business has initiated a work experience program, addressing the employment challenges faced by women over 35 lacking work experience. This initiative allows participants to gain skills and earn income.
Despite space constraints and equipment limitations, the founders remain determined to grow. Their vision includes establishing a larger factory in Khayelitsha to employ more people and make a greater impact.
This women-led enterprise exemplifies the power of entrepreneurship in creating opportunities and fostering community development.
