Khanyisa Khenese and Amahle Cele report at Grocotts Mail that Makana Municipality workers are striking due to unpaid overtime wages.

  • This strike is causing water and electricity problems in Makhanda.
  • Municipal manager Pumelelo Kate admitted the strike is the cause of the crisis.
  • Workers, including those in essential services (Electricity, Water, Sanitation, etc.), are only working normal hours (7:30 am to 4:30 pm).
  • The workers were not paid for overtime in July and August, leading them to refuse extra hours.
  • Deputy chairperson Wandile Duruwe confirmed the strike and said no one will work for free.
  • The unpaid wages are causing frustration and financial uncertainty among workers.
  • Water and power outages are affecting residents, leading to complaints and calls for legal action.
  • Some employees who want to work after hours have been threatened.
  • This is a developing situation.
