The Dean of the Economic and Management Sciences faculty at the University of the Western Cape in collaboration with the Institute for Poverty Land and Agrarian Studies invites you to a webinar on women’s land struggles in postApartheid South Africa.
The webinar will feature the following speakers:

Motlanalo Lebepe – Director (Nkuzi Development Association)
Tshepo Fokane – Acting National Coordinator (Alliance for Rural Democracy)
Nozi Sigwela – Researcher (Ndifuna Ukwazi)

It will be chaired by Nkanyiso Gumede, a researcher at the Institute for Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies.

Many South Africans still face significant obstacles when it comes to gaining access to land in both rural and urban areas. This is despite the provisions in the constitution that the state must take measures to enable citizens to gain access to land on an equitable basis, secure and restore their land rights. Land inequality remains gendered, with women facing barriers and being the least to reap significant benefits from the land reform programme implemented in South Africa since 1994. The speakers will reflect on what it would take tackle the status quo through exploring the questions below.

1.
What are the main challenges facing women in relation to land access in South Africa and why have they persisted?

2.
How have women and their communities responded to continued injustice against them?

3.
Has the state and other key actors done enough to ensure equitable land access, social justice and equitable society?

4.
Are there prospects for change? What should happen moving forward?
